UNIX at 50: How the OS that powered smartphones started from failure.

UNIX was born 50 years ago from the failure of an ambitious project that involved titans like Bell Labs, GE, and MIT. This OS powers nearly all smartphones sold worldwide. The story of UNIX began from a meeting on the top floor of an unremarkable annex at the Bell Labs complex in Murray Hills, New Jersey.

About UNIX

UNIX is a family of multitasking, multiuser computer Operating System. It is derived from the original AT&T UNIX. The development started in the 1970s at the Bell Labs center. The main developers of this OS were Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Douglas Mcllroy and Joe Ossanna. In the early 1990s, AT&T sold its rights in UNIX to Novell.

The unified filesystem is the main means of communication. It uses a shell scripting and command language to combine the tools to perform complex workflows. UNIX is written in C language and thus is available at certain platforms.

At the starting phase, UNIX was not successful. This OS was originally written in assembly language. But later on, it was rewritten in C. the C version has=d many dependent codes and thus was not suitable for coding.

Although after a few years the first port to other platform was made. In 1970-80s UNIS was highly adopted in academic circles. It was used in commercial startups. In the 1990s UNIX grew its popularity through distributors.in 200, Apple released Darwin a product of UNIX system. After the number of starting failure, UNIX OS finally achieved what it deserved
