An independent scientist (historically also known as gentleman scientist) is a financially independent scientist who pursues scientific study without direct affiliation to a public institution such as a university or government-run research and development body.
How do I become an independent researcher without a degree?
Here is a recipe that should turn you into a researcher, no matter who you are:
- Read research papers.
- Write and submit some research papers, books, booklets…
- Prepare and give talks in the field, anywhere where they will have you.
- Get involved in the field. Help organize events, conferences. Connect with the researchers.
Can you publish your own research?
You definitely submit a paper by yourself and if you write a high quality submission, it will be accepted. When I was early in my research career I found it very helpful to have a collaborator such as a teacher/professor or a postdoc student with publishing experience to collaborate on papers.
What to put on an academic paper without affiliation?
Alternatively, you can list yourself without affiliation (since you currently don’t have one) but include a footnote/acknowledgment, “Portions of this research were done while the author was a student at Unseen University and a visitor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”

Do you have to list your former University on an academic paper?
Yes, you must list your former university, either as an affiliation (as aeismail suggests) or as an acknowledgement (as my previous comment suggests). Which alternative is more acceptable/appropriate obviously depends on the standards in your field and how much of the work (not just the writing) you did while you were still a student.
Do you have to update your undergraduate affiliation?
If you performed the work as an undergraduate at your undergraduate institution, then you should continue to list it in work related to that effort. However, you can “update” your address by listing a “current address” along with the old affiliations.
